The Importance of Location and Lighting in Mini Sessions

Mini sessions are a popular way to offer affordable and quick photography sessions to clients. These sessions are typically shorter in duration and more affordable than traditional photography sessions, making them an excellent option for clients who want professional photos but have limited time or budget.

As a photographer, it’s essential to understand the importance of location and lighting in mini sessions to ensure that you produce high-quality photos that meet your clients’ needs.

As a photography business coach, my clients and students love running mini sessions because they are short, sweet, and seasonal.

With the right systems of success, they’ve been able to generate hundreds of thousands of dollars just from shooting a few hours on the weekends a few times a year (pretty awesome right?)!

However, it’s important to remember that the success of mini sessions hinges on two critical factors (and a few others, but today we’re focusing on these =)): location and lighting.

That’s right, the importance of location and lighting in mini sessions cannot be overstated.

In this blog post, we’ll dive into why these factors are so crucial and share some tips and tricks to help you produce high-quality photos that will keep your clients coming back for more.

So, let’s get started!

Importance of Location & Lighting in Mini Sessions

Why Mini Session Location Matters

As a photographer, you know that location is a critical component of any photo shoot. But when it comes to mini sessions, the importance of location is even more significant.

As a photography business coach, I’ve worked with many photographers who initially struggled with choosing the right location for their mini sessions. It’s not always easy to know what factors to consider, and many photographers overlook the importance of location in the success of their mini sessions.

That’s why I created the Mini Like a Pro course, where we delve into location selection in-depth and provide actionable tips to help photographers choose the best location for their mini sessions. We cover everything from the type of location that will best suit your style and brand to the practical considerations like accessibility and parking.

One of the most significant benefits of choosing the right location is the ability to create stations within your session. This means that instead of moving around a single location, you have designated spots set up within the location, creating more variety in the backgrounds and overall feel of the images.

For example, I had a client who wanted a rustic, outdoorsy feel for her family photos. Instead of choosing just one spot within a park, we set up three different stations that included a wooded area, a picnic blanket, and a small stream. By doing this, we were able to capture a range of different shots within the same location, and the client was thrilled with the variety in her images.

So, when selecting a location, think about how you can set up stations within that location to maximize your shooting time and provide your clients with a diverse range of images.

Session Timing is Everything

Additionally, mini sessions are often shorter in duration, which means you don’t have as much time to explore different locations.

By choosing a location that has a variety of backdrops and settings, you can maximize your shooting time and create a diverse range of images for your client.

Another way to prepare your clients for success is to use a session and style guide. This guide can provide your clients with helpful tips on what to wear, how to prepare, and what to expect during their session.

By doing so, you can help your clients feel more comfortable and confident during their mini session, resulting in better images and a more enjoyable experience overall.

Make the Session Comfortable for Your Client

But location isn’t just about aesthetics and practicality; it’s also about creating a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your client.

Choosing a location that is convenient and accessible for your client can make a significant difference in their overall satisfaction with the photo shoot.

Consider factors such as parking, proximity to public transportation, and accessibility for individuals with disabilities.

Photographer Action Steps:

  1. Take some time to research and scout out locations in your area that would be suitable for mini sessions.
  2. Consider factors such as accessibility, variety of backdrops, and overall aesthetic.
  3. Choose a location that meets your clients’ needs and enhances the overall look and feel of your photos.

Choosing the right location for your mini sessions is crucial to their success.

By considering factors such as accessibility, aesthetics, and the ability to set up stations, you can create a comfortable and enjoyable experience for your clients and produce high-quality images that meet their needs.

The Importance of Lighting in Photographing Mini Sessions

As a photography business coach, I’ve worked with many photographers who struggled to master lighting in their mini sessions.

Good lighting can make all the difference in how your subject looks in your final images.

In fact, lighting is one of the most critical elements in photography, and it’s especially important in mini sessions.

My clients and students have found the greatest success with consistency and systems in mini sessions.

That’s why I advise not to try and do too much in mini sessions, as it can lead to fewer images and a worse client experience.

For example, shooting in the middle of the day with the sun high in the sky can create harsh shadows and unflattering lighting. Instead, aim to shoot during the golden hour, which is the hour before sunset or after sunrise when the light is soft and warm.

Photographer Action Steps:

  1. Experiment with different times of day to see how the lighting changes in your chosen locations. This will help you determine the best time to shoot your mini sessions and get the most flattering lighting for your subjects.
  2. Consider using reflectors or diffusers to modify the light and create a more even, flattering look. You can even use simple items like a white sheet or a piece of foam board to reflect light onto your subject.
  3. If you’re shooting indoors, look for areas with plenty of natural light or consider using artificial light sources like softboxes or speedlights. Practice setting up your lighting beforehand so you can make adjustments quickly during your mini session.
  4. Don’t be afraid to get creative with your lighting! Try experimenting with different angles, colors, and intensity levels to create unique and striking images. Just remember to keep your subject in mind and make sure the lighting enhances their natural beauty.
  5. If you want to dive deeper into the topic of lighting in mini sessions, check out the Mini Like a Pro course offered by my photography coaching business. We go in-depth on lighting techniques, equipment, and setups to help you take your mini sessions to the next level.
