WHy every photographer should be blogging for their business

As a photographer, you are also a small business owner. And as a small business owner, unfortunately you wear about ten-thousand hats - and unfortunately (or maybe fortunately if you're into words 'nd stuff) - blogging is just one of them.  My advice?  Yes, even if it isn't your strong suit.  DO IT! There are so many benefits of blogging you’re your photography businesses, and blogs are fairly easy to set up. I know, the first thing that runs through your busy mind is, “I do not have time for that.” I totally understand where you’re coming from, but the benefits of blogging definitely outweigh the inconvenience.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is an intense and overwhelming concept. To put it simply, SEO is the process of optimizing your business’s website so that it can rank higher in search engine results. There are so many factors that contribute to a website’s SEO ranking, and companies will spend big bucks on hiring experts to make sure their site is SEO-friendly.

So, how does blogging help with SEO? Let’s be honest, I know that as a photographer/small business owner, you don’t necessarily have thousands of dollars to spare on SEO optimization (especially during a global pandemic). Blogging is an inexpensive way to boost your website’s SEO by providing search engines with valuable content. Search engines love to provide new and relevant content to searchers. Other than plugging in a few important keywords that your clients may be searching for, blogging is fairly straightforward and doesn’t require a ton of SEO knowledge. When clients ask you to be their photographer, they aren’t just investing in your service, they’re investing in you! People want to feel that connection with the person (or persons) behind the business. They want to know your story. What is important to you? What do you want your customers to know? What value can you offer them before they hand over a single penny?

Blogging is an extremely conversational form of writing, so in a way, you’re talking to your potential customers through your articles. Consistent blogging allows you to build trust, provide value, and cultivate that necessary connection from business to buyer.

If your clients find your blog content valuable, they will be more likely to share it, tweet it, text it, or email it to friends, family, and coworkers. With so many people using so many different social media platforms, having your blog articles shared is basically FREE marketing! Having your blog articles shared by your readers also creates the potential for increased website traffic, which could lead to increased bookings. Marketing is essential, but it’s time-consuming and expensive. Blogging only costs what you’re willing to put into it, and one well-written article with a few killer images can go a long way. 

The bottom line? Blogging is worth it! And I promise it’s not as hard as you think it is. Just picture your ideal client sitting across from you. What would you say to them? If you’re blogging a session, tell your potential clients the story behind the photos. Show them that you’re providing more than just amazing photos, you’re providing and experience.
