GIVE ME YOUR ELEVATOR PITCH.
Hi my name is Betty. I am a wedding photographer based in Montreal Canada. Our studio is an international award-winning photography and videography studio. We are wedding day storytellers with a style of photography that is inherently fine-art, dreamy, and romantic. we strive to make the ordinary extraordinary on your life-changing event, and to capture the legacies that will endure. Our ultimate goal is to give you photos that are real & meaningful, and will never go out of style. Weddings are rooted in ritual and experience, making each unique.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
I loved drawing when I was young, images are expressions to an artist’s inner world, I love expressing my inner thoughts through imagery, and photography is a quicker form of that expression, so I hope to use this as a way to express my understanding of art. The second reason, My mum actually inspired me to start photography as a hobby. she loves to be in front of the camera and be my model :)
IF YOUR BRAND AND/OR BUSINESS HAD A PERSONALITY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE IT?
Elegant, sophisticated, and professional.
HOW DO YOU DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF IN YOUR LOCAL MARKET?
As mentioned above, we differentiate ourselves by capturing and creating wow images that are unique.
Share 3 adjectives that describe you personally.
Professional, enthusiastic, hard-working
SHARE 3 ADJECTIVES THAT DESCRIBE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE.
Magical, dramatic, and elegant.
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM CLIENT.
My target clients are engaged couples (between age of 24-35) who love to travel, have fun and always have something more unique to represent their personality. They value photography more than anything else.
Describe the primary feeling/message you want your clients to experience when interacting with your business.
Professional, Reliable, and trustworthy. Someone who they can completely trust and rely on.
WHAT Year was your first paid session and how much did you charge for it?
I started it as a hobby in 2016 (That's when I started to book my first wedding and I charged roughly $1,500 CAD at that time), but didn't create momentum until about 2017 then took it seriously and turned it into my full-time job last September.
WHAT ONE ACTION CAUSED YOU TO SEE THE MOST GROWTH IN YOUR BUSINESS?
Continued Education, keep learning and find a mentor if possible.
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR BIGGEST BUSINESS FAILURES?
The biggest mistake I made was trying to do everything by myself. Instead of getting out and about meeting new people, sharing ideas, and exposing myself to new opportunities and making new connections, I chose to work in isolation. A large network of connections makes starting a new business much easier.
How did you know when to "quit your day job" and go full-time with photography?
I quit my 9-5 job as a financial analyst at the bank after 5 years of working there last September. Here are some of the indicators: 1- Your income, you've already performed risk assessment and know that you are really financially stable. 2- When you have a well established business with a decent stockpile of resources built up. 3- When you became a professional photographer and gained recognition.
WHEN DID YOU FEEL LIKE YOU "MADE IT" AS A PHOTOGRAPHER?
I love to receive feedback from clients. When I started to build a relationship with all of my clients, and I received tons of positive feedback and referrals. that's when I felt like I made it as a photographer.
What is one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you started your business?
1 - Don't let anyone devalue you or your work (You are the expert)! Having confidence is key. 2 - Don't start when you mastered something, start right away, and don't wait till you get everything perfect. 3 - RAISE YOUR PRICE! 4- Having a CRM since the beginning. 5- Branding with strategy and try not to target everyone. 6- Make connections and try to build a long-lasting relationship with vendors.
WHAT IS YOUR PROFESSIONAL PURPOSE?
As of now, my professional purpose is to further my knowledge, refining my skills in both business and photography. I hope I will find and meet new challenges and create a large body of work of which I am proud of. As for some big dreams and future plans, I would love to start mentoring and offering workshops in different cities around the world so that I can share my knowledge and experience to other photographers or business owners.
WHAT IS THE HARDEST THING ABOUT RUNNING A SMALL BUSINESS?
The hardest thing is to create a consistent brand to attract your ideal customers.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM?
